Major League Soccer
The Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top league soccer in the United States and Canada. It is the first professional division of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF or U.S. Soccer) and the Canadian Soccer Association, member of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
The quality of play in the U.S. has improved since the league was founded in 1996 resulting in the success of the national team's World Cup 2002 World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 1930. Many of the members of the selection in this World Cup were current or former MLS players.
Desde 1984 com o final da NASL (North America Soccer League) os Estados Unidos não tinham uma liga profissional de futebol reconhecida pela FIFA, até que em 17 de dezembro de 1993, cumprindo uma promessa da US Soccer se a Copa do Mundo de 1994 fosse nos Estados Unidos, era novamente fundada uma liga de futebol profissional nos Estados Unidos, a Major League Soccer. A liga começou em 1996 com dez equipes e teve bom público durante a primeira temporada, mas depois o número de espectadores diminuiu, ainda que tivesse se estabilizado nos últimos anos.
